First Friday

Hi, dear reader! I’m Jessica.

Trying to smile while facing the bright Colorado sun.

I’m a freelance writer living in Colorado, but a nearly-native Floridian at heart. Sometimes I pine for sweet tea, proper biscuits and gravy, and long days spent at the beach.

But then I’ll go hiking in Boulder or enjoy a beer outside without being viciously attacked by mosquitoes and humidity, and I know I’m in the right place.

I’ve enjoyed writing almost as long as I’ve been reading books. As an obsessive bookworm I’ve come to appreciate the power of storytelling: the idea of plucking an idea, a person, an entire world from your imagination and putting it down on paper (or in a Google doc.)

We connect to each other through stories. And so with this blog, where I plan to write about freelance writing, books, and living in Colorado, I hope I can connect with and inspire you.

Let’s get on with it!

It’s almost #FRIYAY! Here are a few of my recent favorite things.

Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble by Dan Lyons

This was one of my favorite books I’ve read so far for my 2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge. Since I work in a coworking office space in downtown Denver, I’ve seen and heard many of the ridiculous things found in tech startup culture that Lyons relays in his book. (The most innocuous of which is a wall of free snacks and candy, which I never had a problem with.)

I love you, Mr. Bubbs

THIS. DOG. I don’t remember how many times I’ve watched this. Mr. Bubbs is me.

Crazy Rich Asians is going to change Hollywood

“After years of saying otherwise, Hollywood has finally realized that telling more inclusive stories is just good business.”

The book is on my To Read list and I have not yet seen the movie, but I can’t wait to do both. I loved both film and book versions of The Joy Luck Club (the most recent movie before Crazy Rich Asians to feature an all-Asian cast!) and as an Asian-American myself it’s wonderful to see a movie like this do well.

What are you reading/watching/currently obsessed with?
